PERUGIA, ITALY - NOVEMBER 24: Amanda Knox spe...

Editor’s Note: Guest Post By Dave Thomas If the Casey Anthony’s, Amanda Knox’s and many other infamous individuals and stories had been happening back in the day, they would not have gained near the notoriety they did this year or in recent years due to social media. As we all know, social media was not around back in the mid-1990s when O.J. Simpson’s murder trial gripped the nation. While the trial was a fixture on television stations such as CNN and FoxNews, there were no tweets or shares because Twitter and Facebook, respectively were not born yet. Had they been [...]

ipad-kindle fire amazon

Folks at Sodahead conducted a poll to gauge how people have been responding to the new Amazon tablet. Turns out 61 percent of respondents believe that the iPad will maintain its leadership position, while only 39 percent think that the new device from Amazon will catch “fire” and become the tablet of choice. Here are some other findings: Specifically, those aged 45 and below favor the iPad over the Kindle Fire by a 66 percent to 34 percent ratio, while respondents who are over 45 believe the Kindle Fire may be the device for them by a 51 percent to [...]

If you haven’t been living under the rock, you might have heard about the violent riots in London couple of months ago. It was perhaps one of the worst riots the world had ever seen. The riots were a bit different this time around. Protesters had social media tools at their disposal. Facebook, Twitter and Blackberry messenger were used to co-ordinate attacks and create violence. As a counter measure, social media activity was cracked down and authorities sought the help of Blackberry officials to identify the suspects. So, Was This The End Of Social Rioting? Apparently protestors have found a [...]

Usenet – The Original Social Network

A segment of a social network

Editor’s Note: Guest Post By Jared Scott What was the first social network? Ask your average Internet user what the first social network was and they are likely to tell you MySpace (launched in 2003).  And a few more may even tell you it was Friendster (launched in 2002). It certainly wasn’t Orkut (2004), Facebook (2004) or Google+ (2011). In recent years, it seems like no matter where you turn social networking is the in thing.  Nearly every company wants you to follow them on Facebook or Twitter. Would you believe that the original social network was launched in 1979? [...]

Is Social Media Making Us Outcasts?

by Guest on September 13, 2011

Outcast

On any given day, whether at work, in a restaurant, or in a movie theater, you’re likely to see dozens of people with their heads down texting, tweeting, and updating their Facebook status. We’re so enthralled with staying connected it’s just a matter of time before our devices are tethered to our hips. In light of our dependency on the social web, it should come as no surprise a subset of the population is rallying behind the idea that social media is a noxious demon threatening to destroy our ability to interact with one another. Leading the charge is MIT [...]

5 Ways to Ensure You Never Get Hired [Infographic]

i hate work

I have written about this topic several times before and here I am writing it again. People still don’t understand how risky it is to let oneself loose on social networking sites. Employers need a reason to fire — or a reason to not hire a person – and it’s an open secret. Facebook seems to be the favorite hunting ground for employers simply because people tend to share almost everything with their friends. Almost half of the companies indulge in social media snooping to find out both positives and negatives in a potential employee. A simple change in privacy [...]

Television And Social Media: Embrace Or Die

by Shashank on September 6, 2011

Television

Companies ranging from Apple to Google have made several attempts to bring the online experience to television, but on almost all the occasions have failed to find consumers. Reasons for the failure vary, but they have nothing to do with social media as a platform for the medium. Speaking at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, Eric Schmidt forsees a decline in TV viewership if the TV industry fails to utilise internet. “Both industries have come from such different backgrounds and viewpoints that it has taken a very long time to agree on what the common goals are”, he says. [...]

Most organizations do not have policies to regulate social media usage at workplace – and even if guidelines exist, they are often not communicated with the employees. Employees often abuse the system by spending too much time on social networking sites  – accompanied by occassional rants about their bosses. The productivity loss from social media at work is huge. Basex estimated the loss from interruptions alone at $650 billion per year. The study also finds that social media hampers innovation at work – which is certainly far serious. As digital space evolves, it has become evident that social media regulations [...]

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 25: In this photo ill...

With kids back in or in the process the next few weeks of returning to school, a new report out from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at New York’s Columbia University certainly must have some parents a little edgy. According to the CASA survey, American teens of middle and high school age are more apt to engage in smoking, drinking and using drugs should they also be surfing social networking sites. The two social networking sites which received the most attention were Facebook and MySpace. The study points out that teenagers devoting any time at all [...]
