The looming question about Delicious’ fate has been put to rest after Youtube founders agreed to buy the bookmarking service from Yahoo. It was rumored that Stumbleupon would acquire the service owing to the fact that they both have similar interests but it turns out Chad Hurley and Steve Chen would be at the helm of its operations. The news ends speculation about Delicious which saw a sharp decline in traffic in Dec 2010 due to an announcement from Yahoo about its intention to shutdown the service. Back then, rival services like Pinboard had witnessed a steep increase in traffic [...]

Digg Button Kit v1.0

This is indeed a serious allegation on any company, let alone on an organization that is struggling to set foothold in the internet market. Digg CEO, Matt Williams has been busy reassuring people about Digg’s traffic numbers. He even put up a brave face when Digg’s critics ripped the new V4 version into peices. While Digg has staved off its decline rate, it still hasn’t found a right combination of “information” and “sense of community”. Recently among its other new features, Digg introduced “Story View Counts” that was supposed to act as an indicator to how popular a story on [...]

Stumbleupon sampled over 60 million distinct URLs categorized across over 500 interests to come up with exhaustive set of data. The site recently hit 1 billion stumbles and continues to grow beyond. Facts and figures shared, Stumbling increases very quickly in the morning commute hours, and mobile plays a big part in that – during this time, mobile stumbling is 70% higher than the daily mobile stumbling average. stumbleupon stumbles

Stumbleupon has reached a milestone of a billion stumbles and the graph of its growth has been shared by its CEO Garrett Camp. The site has witnessed an exponential growth in one year and continues to grow at a rapid pace. Compared to other networking sites, Stumbleupon is a whole different experience which is also the reason why the site generated so many stumbles. A stumble is nothing but a pageview and the site encourages users to stumble and share interesting content. The very premise of the site is based on clicking on the stumble button and I don’t think this [...]

Jeremy Edberg, Operations Manager, reddit.com

Yesterday, AllThingsDigital reporter Peter Kafka reported that Reddit’s parent company Conde Nast is mulling the idea of selling a stake in Reddit. Turns out, the news item ended up annoying Reddit’s operations manager Jeremy Edberg. According to Kafka, “The publisher would continue to own the site, but it’s talking to investors about selling a stake. Sources tell me it is floating a $200 million valuation.” He further adds that it gives Reddit a better chance to compete for capital, managers and employees alongside the likes of zippy startups like Quora, StackExchange, etc. Kafka does not name any source from where he [...]

Worlds Collide Onboard the S.S. Jeremiah O’Bri...

I have written numerous posts on this blog covering the transition of Digg from its V3 version to the present V4. Every few days, the company has been iterating its product and coming out with new features. Digg hopes to arrest its plummeting traffic by reintroducing the features of V3 and making the site more lively. The fact that the site has reintroduced some of its older features makes me wonder if there was really a need for Digg to have a new version. After all, if monetizing the site was its main concern, it could have done things completely [...]

According to unconfirmed reports Yahoo has sold Delicious bookmarking service for $5 million. The amount is almost the third of what Yahoo spent to acquire Delicious. Since early December, there were reports of Yahoo planning to shut down Delicious and in the same month, a blog post by Delicious confirmed the speculation, ” No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive.”
