Digg has come out strongly hitting critics who have been pointing out its falling traffic numbers ever since the version 4 was launched. In its official blog post, Ben Folk-Williams VP Engineering at Digg writes that the team at Digg had seen enough of it and hence have decided to post a snapshot of Google Analytics to prove everything was OK at Digg. “From time to time at Digg we see speculation on our traffic based on ‘estimated data,’ and ominous prognostication of what it means. But the story is pretty different if you’re looking at the actual data.” he says. Digg [...]

Just when everybody thought Digg had become irrelevant, the company has surprised us all with its new traffic numbers. Since last year, Digg has come up with new set of features, almost every single month. Transition from Version 3 to 4 almost killed the site. It had to deal with angry users, mass exodus and a CEO (Kevin Rose) who decided to leave the company in midst of a crisis. Matt Williams was later appointed the CEO to bring back the site from ruins. According to the company’s latest blog post: Unique visitors to Digg have increased, Newsroom traffic has grown by 4x [...]

As Delicious continues to douse its self-inflicted fire, rival site Pinboard appears to have figured out the reason why Delicious users are hating the change. A quick recap: Delicious relaunched its site last week paving the way for new set of features on the site. While older features were not done away with, they were definitely suppressed by newer, bolder ones. This meant users were in for a rude shock as they logged onto the site. Problems were aplenty. Lost bookmarks, non-working RSS feeds, login issues…you name it, the site had all. A look at their Facebook page will tell [...]

Delicious has undergone a serious makeover under the watchful eyes of Youtube founders — and now its owners Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. The site has shed its traditional approach to sharing and saving links on the platform and has instead adopted bold colors, bright pictures and a great user interface to reinvent itself. The homepage of the site will remind you a lot of Canv.as(a photo caption social networking site) though. Delicious has radically changed the way you use the site. Regular users will find it a completely new experience using the site. You now create stacks that hold links [...]

Delicious will undergo a major upgrade later this year when the site shifts its focus from plain bookmarking to Digg-like social link sharing. In an interview to NYT, founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen elaborated their plans for Delicious. While the basic premise of the site would still remain the same, the home page would feature browseable “stacks,” or collections of related images, videos and links shared around topical events. Similar to Digg, Delicious would also offer personalized recommendations for its users. Chen believes making the site social will allow users to curate content and deliver quality results. Are Delicious [...]

Reddit is now Reddit Inc. The parent company Condé Nast has loosened its grip on the site and will now allow it to function independently. Reddit’s traffic has exploded 4x to a staggering 1.6 billion pages served per month and accounts for 6,500 subreddits with over 100 subscribers. With growth comes challenges. Reddit was never taken seriously by its parent company and the site had to ask its users to buy gold subscriptions to support additional servers. Reddit Inc. will report to a Board and therefore have much more operational freedom than when we were a division of Condé Nast. Reddit co-founder [...]

Yesterday, news about Stumbleupon referring about 50% of social media traffic to sites hit the front page of majority of tech-blogs. If you observe the graph closely, this piece of news should not have come as a surprise. Over the years, Stumbleupon has always maintained a significant edge over other social media sites because of the very nature of the site. But what interests me is battle at the bottom end of the graph. The all out war between Digg and Reddit has cooled down for a while and while both the sites have made considerable progress from last year, [...]

Delicious is on a path of revamping itself into a new avatar, thanks to a renewed focus from its new owners Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. First noticed by TNW, AVOS the parent company of Delicious has posted job openings to bring back Delicious from ruins. The company needs a Web developer, Web browser extension developer, an application developer, a Communication manager and a General counsel. The development roles would be to build and refine features for delicious.com while the Communication manager needs to [...]

Pinboard, the bookmarking site which emphasizes more on speed over socializing has had a remarkable growth story. Without being caught into the social trap, the site channeled its resources towards maintaining up-times and offering a serious paid alternative to Delicious. Ever since its launch, the site has been queitly adding numbers to its service – many of whom came during the infamous Delicious exodus in Dec 2010. Last year at the same time, the site had 3.5 million bookmarks, 11.2 million tags, 2.5 million urls, 187 GB of archived content. Fast forward 365 days and we have a completely different [...]

4chan founder Christopher Poole once said,”The cost of failure is really high when you are contributing as yourself”. So he built social community site 4Chan. 4Chan is different in terms of what we normally expect from a social networking site. The content is mostly adult oriented and users post content on the site anonymously. To understand this unique one of a kind site, six university students studied 4Chan for two weeks to understand how exactly the site remained functional under an anoynmous enclosure. The students focused on 4chan’s first and most popular board, the “random” board known as /b/. They [...]
