For those of you who aren’t familiar with Buffer: the app lets you schedule tweets or Facebook posts so as to spread them across the day, ensuring you reach a wider audience and attain higher CTR and rate of engagement.

The app aimed at marketers and power users has already gained traction among who’s who of social media, and while it does have paid plans for heavy users, you can still grab a free account for one of your Twitter and Facebook profiles. Leonhard Widrich who handles Community & Coverage at BufferApp was kind enough to answer questions I put forward to him, and here’s how it went:

You run “Buffer Twitter Tips” blog along with your App. Most startups often neglect the blogging part focusing entirely on their product. So what prompted you to blog and what results have you seen from your blogging effort?

Yes, that’s a great question, blogging has always been a top priority for us. The results were amazing. Firstly, it allowed us to create significant traffic and new signups for Buffer. Every day, we are getting around 50 signups from our own blog.
Knowing how to blog and which articles do well, also was a great chance to understand how copywriting works. Especially when approaching the press for write-ups about Buffer, this was extremely helpful.

You have recently introduced Facebook integration. Do you see any difference in the way people schedule posts on Twitter and Facebook?

Sure, so with Buffer for Facebook, we have absolutely seen a very different use case than for Twitter. People normally post a lot less frequently, and pictures and previews of posts are a lot more relevant. I also saw that a more informal, personal tone in posts helps to get a lot more interaction.

You are now on Android, on iPhone. You have presence on Facebook also…what’s next?

Haha, yes, it has been really busy the past few months. As the next step, we have planned the expansion to other Social Networks. You will be able to Buffer to Google+, LinkedIn and Pinterest real soon too. This should make the product even more complete I hope.
We are also working on an improved timing algorithm, that should help users get more interaction on their updates and get them even better results from Social Media.

Aren’t you worried that automating tweets reduces human – human interaction?

That’s a great question Shashank and we have been discussing it a lot. With Buffer, we have always aimed to stay away from the full automation side. So, Tweets or Facebook updates are still written by you. All that Buffer does is change the timing of the update so it reaches more people.
In short, we want to be an optimization tool, not an automation tool. It’s always key to know that you have spent time, sourcing and curating these updates.

You have recently raised $400,000 from angel investors. How will the money translate into improving the product?

Yes, I am really happy we could close our round recently. Absolutely, so with the money we are aiming to firstly hire a few more people. This will help us to build all the features we have planned a lot quicker and move faster.

We are also able to put more resources on buying in some already developed widgets and plugins. More will be announced real soon regarding this.

What is the single piece of advice you would like to share with the other startups ?

Hmm, so the single piece of advice I would give is to validate everything you do. Never think your idea is awesome, without building a shitty prototype and actually getting some feedback on it. There is often a huge gap between what we think will work and what people actually use. Whatever you think will work – test it and validate it first, before building a whole product. Joel wrote a fantastic post about this here.

Is there an ideal way of using Buffer App?

That’s a good one. So I think you will get the most out of using Buffer with one of the browser extensions (Chrome, Safari or Firefox). It will allow you to add a new article to your Buffer from any website and have it scheduled and posted at a better time.
What I like to do is spend only about 10 minutes every morning, reading the latest blogposts and filling up my Buffer with Tweets and FB posts. This then guarantees that there will be great content posted for my followers for the rest of the day.
