You’ll either love it or hate it, but you cannot get away without an opinion. Though it’s in beta phase, Pinterest has amassed millions of users and is undoubtedly the hottest startup of 2012. Unlike majority of websites that rely on coverage from blogs and Hacker News community to gain early-adopters, Pinterest relied on housewives and word-of-mouth to spread their word, and while the site is different in its own way, the basic rules of social media still apply. To put its growth into perspective, here are the latest stats from Lemon.ly: 1. Pinterest has crossed 10 million users. 2. Used [...]

The biggest challenge for any social media marketer out there is to decide when and what to share on social networks. Marketers often have to rely on their gut or on surveys to come up with a predetermined timing. Most of these surveys though have a very small sample size and do not take into consideration the sheer size and diversity of either Facebook or Twitter. But the fact is, sharing at the right moment has its obvious benefits — users are far more receptive and the posts often generate higher engagement levels. But above all, sharing the right kind [...]

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Buffer: the app lets you schedule tweets or Facebook posts so as to spread them across the day, ensuring you reach a wider audience and attain higher CTR and rate of engagement. Leonhard Widrich who handles Community & Coverage at BufferApp was kind enough to answer questions I put forward to him, [...]

Imagine one fine day Facebook or Twitter suspends your account. You apply for reactivation and then wait until the account is restored, but there is a good chance of your account never seeing the light of the day leaving you with no option but to open a fresh account and start all over again. Social media plays a dominant role in our lives and it is estimated that 22 percent of all time online, or one in every four and half minutes is spent on a social network. ShowYouLikeIt is a new social app that aims to create a social experience out of Facebook Likes. Last year, we covered Likester, another social app that pretty much did the same thing, but ShowYouLikeIt focuses more on socializing rather than being a Like popularity engine. ShowYouLikeIt lets you share your Facebook Likes with your friends and lets you Like Pages that have been shared by others. Upon signing-up, you are asked to choose between a private and a public profile. Public profile allows you to share your likes with everyone on the site. If you are the one worried about privacy, select Private profile instead. [...]

Klout score is an important measurement metric for any company looking to hire staff for its social media wing. Having a high Klout score indicates reach and influence on social media sites, which is why marketers take it so seriously. It takes months if not years of effort to attain a decent score. So when the company decided to tweak its algorithm to expand its reach and make it more accurate, little did the users expect that their scores would fall by as much as 5 to 10 points. Like any other online protest, users have been ranting on Twitter, [...]

Google has been known to buy startups even if they don’t happen to fit in its scheme of things. It has now snapped a young startup that was launched barely a year ago. Social Grapple was developed and run by Andrey Petrov who had earlier developed another Twitter tool TweetSpect. It appears to be just another talent acquisition. Why would Google buy a Twitter analytics firm when it has its own social network to think about? I would imagine Google is probably working on its in-house Google+ analytics tool. The launch of business pages may as well coincide with the launch of an analytics [...]

In a rather surprising move, Spotify has disabled its own sign-up option, and has instead made it mandatory for new users to sign-up using Facebook credentials. A Spotify employee who goes by the name Darren on the company’s online forum says, users need to adapt to the change made by the company. “Unfortunately you will need a Facebook account to access Spotify from now on, unless you already have an account set up. This does not stop you creating the Facebook account adding nothing to it and making it totally private as the Facebook account does not have to be [...]
