According to Alexa, Youtube is now the third most visited website worldwide pushing Yahoo to number four. In my previous article, it had been reported that online video consumption is on the rise and being the leader among videos sites, no doubt Youtube has garnered the largest share of the pie. So where does this  leave Yahoo. To understand exactly why Yahoo lost to Youtube, We need to dig deeper into the Alexa’s statistics and it does throw some interesting facts, youtube logo Youtube climbs to third spot pushing Yahoo to four

  • Yahoomail is the most used Yahoo service getting about 43% of the site’s traffic while the its main site yahoo.com gets traffic of about 8%. Its search engine gets about 10% of the traffic. Though its not clear which service of Yahoo has taken a hit, its highly likely that its the Yahoo Mail which has lost out to Gmail and the new Windows Live mail which incorporates Social media updates.
  • Yahoo is over represented by the 65+ age group which means its not quite popular with the younger lot. Yahoo has virtually no presence in Social media except Yahoo Social Pulse which again is a Social network profile aggregator. Yahoo has made no serious attempt to enter the Social media space and its other services like Yahoo chat have taken a serious beating from Skype.
  • After visiting Yahoo, 18% of users either go to Facebook, Google or Youtube, the top three sites on Alexa. It means Yahoo is indirectly driving traffic to these site which offer what Yahoo does not.

With Bing powering Yahoo search now, more users are expected to switch to Bing and that will only mean more bad news for Yahoo.

Do you think, Yahoo is losing the game?
