This morning while sending out a tweet, I noticed something very different when I typed @ in the input field. Twitter started listing out the people I am following depending on the letters I was typing in the field. The feature strikes an undenying resembelence with Facebook “@” feature that was introduced by Facebook last week where in it lists your friends when you type @ in a comment box. People following tons of other people on Twitter will find it easy to communicate. Infact, the feature is far more useful on Twitter than on Facebook. The news has not [...]

Post by | Jeb Banner, CEO of SmallBox Web Designs This is a question I’ve been pondering for the last few months. Although you might think my answer would be- “always! let SmallBox handle it”- it isn’t. Beyond the fact that we aren’t going to be the right marketing outsource solution for every company, there are also very legitimate reasons for many companies to have internal marketing staff. Some of the variables include your industry, your marketplace, your size, your target customer, etc. The question becomes when and how to go outside for these services. The challenge with modern marketing [...]

Using social media marketing to get in front of your target markets can be extremely powerful and extremely affordable. But you risk casting yourself in a negative light if you do not engage professionally in your social media activities. Let me give you an example of what I mean: I met an architect at a live networking event. His card did not include a website URL and his email was a pacbell.net email address. Curious about him, I did a search on LinkedIn, and, in his profile, I discovered a link to his website. When I checked out his website, [...]

Its 2011 and there will be fewer people comparing Facebook to MySpace now. Things for MySpace have gone awry and it now plans to fire almost half of the staff in coming days. Inside sources have told AllThingsDigital that MySpace plans to axe 50 percent of the 1,100 employees. The company’s revenue has trickled down ever since Facebook overtook MySpace to become the number one social networking site. Rupert Murdoch may eventually sell off MySpace by the end of 2011 if the site’s market share continues to plummet. I had earlier written about MySpace’s falling traffic and it now re-confirms [...]

There is a interesting thread going on in Quora which is discussing as to why companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo did not succeed at social networking. The question has been answered by an ex-Google employee Aaron B Iba, who worked for Google in 2005 and also for the Orkut team. Aaron went on to co-found a YCombinator company(AppJet). This is what he has answered, “I worked at Google in 2005 and briefly on the Orkut team. I encountered an environment that viewed social networking as a frivolous form of entertainment rather than a real utility, and I’m pretty sure [...]

Facebook is blocking j.mp links to combat spam and malicious content. J.mp is operated by Bit.ly and offers similar functionalities that Bit.ly offers. The issue was first reported by InsideFacebook and it is not known when Facebook plans to unblock the links. J.mp is used by millions to shorten long links, but it also facilitates spammers to hide their links and replace them with genuine looking j.mp links. I tried my hands to see if Facebook is blocking new links too. I shortened the links on j.mp and tried to post on my wall. To my surprise, I got the [...]

In a world of Google and Bing, smaller players find it very difficult to create a space for themselves in the search engine market. The only way these smaller ones survive is by attracting a niche audience and offering something unique. Blekko might look like just another search engine, but what’s under its hood will leave you impressed. The concept of Slash has been introduced by Blekko. Suffixing ” / ” to search queries eliminates the unnecessary stuff in the results while narrowing down the search to a certain topic or domain.
