Earlier this week, there were conflicting reports about the effect of Timeline on brands’ Facebook Pages. A study conducted by Simply Measured revealed brands were witnessing a sharp decline in rates of engagement which was in contrast to two separate studies conducted by Wildfire and Virtue that believed engagement rates had in fact shot up for most of the brands that had more than a million fans on their respective Pages. The three social media companies used three different methodologies to arrive at the results, which is why you might have seen two different versions of articles on tech-blogs depending [...]

Facebook commerce was expected to take-off by now, but for some reason, things haven’t gone down that way, and while there are some signs that indicate it’s on the rise, the fact that many big brands have shut their shop can hardly be ignored. GAP, J.C Penney, Nordstrom and Gamestop are some of the brands that have packed their bags and abandoned Facebook. Regardless of what happens to Facebook and the whole e-commerce thing, mothers seem to have got a liking for the platform. In an interview to The Telegraph, Christian Taylor, the co-founder and chief executive of Payvment revealed that most shoppers [...]

The photo that you see above is where it all began. Go on, taker a closer look. Do you see a Search bar on Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Profile? … Perhaps you failed notice at the first glance, but you are not the only one; in fact many missed it completely until an eagle-eyed developer noticed it and blogged about it couple of months ago. There are few good reasons why Facebook is keen to have a deep presence in Search. But let’s first see what BusinessWeek reported today. It reports “About two dozen Facebook engineers, led by a former Google engineer [...]

Facebook is all set to convert Pages into Timelines, March 31st being the deadline. The company provided enough buffer time for brands to customize, play with and understand the nitty gritty of the feature. Majority of Page-admins have already made the switch, but some are withholding until Facebook acts on its own. Several studies indicate Timeline is great for brands as it provides ample space for brand exposure, highlights interesting content with pinning feature and guarantees higher rates of interaction. Early adopters like Enoteca La Storia, a wine bar, have found perfect way to blend their business with Facebook, and Timeline is helping [...]

Facebook has hit the ceiling and reaching that billion figure may take longer than expected. The fact was even mentioned in the company’s SEC filing and analysts are predicting the golden days are behind the company. But some of the reports, which I personally find ridiculous, suggest the site is on the decline. The news has set cat among the pigeons and potential investors are now wary of buying the stock. Many are contending Facebook is now less exciting, and the argument is fair if you look at what the company has been doing lately. Timeline appears to be the biggest sore [...]

After its rapid rise to the top, Facebook next challenge is to monetize its mobile platform. Barring Facebook Credits, the company does not gain anything from its mobile app as its main source of revenue — advertisements — is not served on the platform. But news reports suggests things are about to change soon. But First…Mobile Traffic Is Growing According to StatCounter’s latest released data, global Internet usage through mobile devices, not including tablets, has almost doubled to 8.5% in January 2012 from 4.3% last year. In 2009, mobile traffic accounted 0.7% of overall web traffic, which has now risen [...]

Guest Post By Stephanie Kopf Europe’s relationship with Facebook has been strained of late. The social platform has been facing criticism from both politicians and users regarding its privacy policy and using of personal data. And now it’s on: a team of students from Vienna, Austria is pushing for more transparency and user control from the social networking website. Chances are that you are on Facebook. And maybe recently or a while ago you vented to a friend about something in a message. Then you cooled down and deleted it. No use clogging up your inbox. So how would you [...]

If you haven’t read it already, Facebook has partnered with brands allowing them to host applications for you to use on your Timeline. You can grab some of your favorite apps from the market and add them to your Timeline. Last year, in its f8 conference, Facebook announced Open Graph and introduced the concept of frictionless sharing. Since then, many apps have been built on this platform that can send your trail of activity back to Facebook. Facebook uses this information to display your activity to your friends in the form of “Alan read XYZ” or “Alan listened to XYZ”, eliminating the [...]

Facebook has done the unthinkable — at least from the users’ point of view — by introducing ads in News feed. First revealed by the company back in December, the feature has now gone into effect. On the face of it, it appears Facebook is finally opening the door for advertisers to tap into its unadulterated News Feed section. But, keeping the users’ experience intact is still its highest priority, and while this may sound like yet another way to advertise, it does change the dynamics of how brands and users engage on the platform. So How Does It Work? [...]

Zynga captivated the Facebook audience back in 2009 with its first game FarmVille requiring users to manage farms, plow lands, harvest crops and raise livestock. The social aspect allowed users to share gifts and compete with one another, propelling Farmville to the top of the list as the most played game on Facebook. The game maker added millions of users overnight and captured the imagination of a wide, but loyal audience that was willing to spend cash and time on their properties. Having found the secret sauce to success, Zynga launched couple more games that utlised the original idea, but [...]
